Hoopaholic of the Month - May

gemma

Name: Gemma

Hoopaholic for: 7 Months

How did you get into hooping ? Why did you start hooping?
I used to do it as a kid but I got seriously hooked on hooping about 6 months ago. First of all I was thinking it would be a good alternative to sit ups and help with toning up the tum but once I brought my hoops I knew this was the start of something fun. At first it was just a challenge keeping it up but then as soon as I learnt my first trick there was no stopping me.

What do you get out of hooping?
It’s a great way for me to unwind and switch off to the world. After a good session you can’t wipe the smile off my face – I was telling my friend the other day ‘You just can’t imagine how happy it makes me’ . It’s shifting off some inches around the waist as well – bonus!!

First hoop memory: It’s a bit of a sad one actually – I was about 10 and I was going for a Gemma record …I wrote a poem about it and to this day it still brings a tear to the eye due to how disappointed I was.

My hoop was bright orange
And weighted with whooshy sand
I’d hoop for blooming ages
It really was quite grand

Id’ hoop and hoop, twist and twirl
Round and round it’d go
How long I would be hooping
I’d never really know

So Lucie she did time me
‘Keep going she would cheer
My first goal was 30 minutes
And I knew I was getting near

I was a hooping hero
Not tired or flagging at all
I felt I could go forever
The hoop would never fall

And then something happened
The reason I never found
Burt walk towards me
And my hoop fell to the ground.

Favourite hoop moves: Love foot hooping – don’t know why but I think it’s just so …. cool. It’s a bit sexy (well has the potential to be) and also you are laying down you can be lazy – lazy sexy hooping !!
Some of the hand and arm hooping moves are fantastic – unfortunately I haven’t mastered them very well yet.

Signature moves: I still feel like just a beginner but I can hoop both clockwise and anti-clockwise and do most tricks both ways. As I mentioned before foot hooping and the Mummy as we call it when you jump into the hoop and wrap it round your body into a lasso.

Hoop heros: I have to say Bunny, Jon and Tim – they have taught me so much. The support and encouragement from Bunny and Tim has been amazing – oh you’re the best ☺

Hoop ambitions / dreams / fantasies:
I can definitely see hooping playing a big part in my future – it just brings so much joy to my life that I’ll never let it go. I would love to perform. Currently I am lacking the courage to get up there but I don’t think it will be long…
